What is a thriller film?

Thriller Films

Over the summer I watched three thriller films in an attempt to answer the question "what is a thriller film?"

The first film I watched was Inception. The film is a complicated riddle full of twists and questions that are never really answered and even the ending keeps you thinking as it is left on a cliff hanger. The characters each have their own secrets that thy are trying to with hold for example Dom (the main character played by Leonardo Di Caprio) is trying to hide the fact that he is struggling with his past and is being blamed for the murder of his wife. Dom's main aim throughout the film is to get back to his children who he had to leave due to being on the run.
The most complicated part of the film to understand is the concept of dreams. That one can enter dreams and play around with the thoughts and feelings of the dreamer.
From this film we can assume that thriller films are designed to make you think and question the story.

The second film I watched was Casino Royal, a typical bond movie. It consists of Bond's typical stature, seducing as many women as he can while solving secret missions around the world for MI7. However in this particular Bond film, James finally gets a taste of his own medicine for, after falling for 'Vesper' one of his Bond girls, there is a twist at the end of the story and she turns out to be the criminal all along.
From this film we can assume that thriller films have a twist at the end to makes us drastically change our mind about an event or character that we have followed throughout the film.

The third film I watched can be classed as a crime thriller in the form of Sherlock Holmes. This film is based entirely on mysteries, based in the late 1800's Holmes and his companion Watson have to solve the mystery of Lord Blackwell who has appeared to come back to life. This movie injects some kind of fear in you, not enough to scare you but enough to be kept in suspense about hwat may or may not happen next, the clever minds of Sherlock and Watson keep you entertained as you try and keep up with their reasoning and see if you can figure out the crimes before they do.
From this film we can assume thriller films are designed to create mystery and suspense throughout the movie.

Therefore to answer the question, 'What is a thriller film' we can conclude that thriller films are designed to make you think and solve some kind of puzzle with in the film, they usually have a twist in the plot and are used to create mystery and suspense.
